Houston Chronicle - Volleyball: Academy helps to showcase area talent

Here's a must read article that was done by the Houston Chronicle about AVA:

Volleyball: Academy helps to showcase area talent
By Corey Roepken | July 16, 2013

Suzy Boulavsky had an illustrious high school volleyball career and carried that over to an ultra-successful four-year run at Oklahoma.

It's difficult to say she would have benefited more from a club closer to her home, but she's sure of two things. She would not have had to put so many miles on her car, and Absolute Volleyball Academy of Texas is doing wonders for young players on the south side of town.

Katy Garza and Jerry Linch co-founded AVA in 2006 when they realized combining their clubs could create a volleyball juggernaut.

In 2009 they built a large facility in Dickinson. The club already was on the upswing at that point, but that's also the year in which AVA won its first national title.

Perhaps the most important thing, though, is that through the first seven years every high school senior in the program has been awarded a college scholarship. There were a couple of years the club had three 18-under teams.

"They did a really good job of taking care of the talent in south Houston," said Boulavsky, who has coached at AVA each of the last four summers. "When I was playing there weren't a lot of options on our side of town. They kept it as a stable place for people in the south Houston districts."
